I started building a home gym two years ago. I bought a Bowflex Extreme and like it very much. I wanted to add free weights too, as that is what I am used to. I decided to go with the 1090 adjustable dumbbells. Wow, what a fantastic purchase. The dumbbells are adjustable, of course. It cuts down on space and makes it very convenient and versatile. If you've been around a gym a while, you'll notice in using these that you can have "offset" weight on the bell, making it incredibly effective at targeting biceps, delts, and triceps. The quick change on weight parameters makes it super easy to get from one exercise to the next. I can't say enough positive things about these. It does take a few times to get used to the handling of these, as they have quite a bit of width on them, but the training video is great to figure out how to get the best workout. Warning- go lighter than you'd normally go when working out with these.

I am a 60+ female and I purchased these weights to complete my at home workouts. I have seen other brands of these weights but never as well made as the Bowflex brand. I would have given these weights a 5+ rating except they have a real sticking problem. It is very difficult when you are in the middle of a workout and the weights stick in the holder. I for one think Bowflex owes their customers some research on a product that would assist in keeping these weights from sticking. These weights are not cheap but when not sticking the best I could find.

At first I was nervous about buying these weights. I had heard that there was problems with the locking mechanism slipping or breaking, and this worried be for any exercise that involved them being lifted over my head. However, customer service said that this was only a problem if you dropped the weights and abused them. And they were right.
These are the easiest and fastest dumbbells I've ever used. Powerblocks are awkward, and regular dumbbells take too long to change weight on. Just sit these in the holster and select a weight.
What the website doesn't tell you is that you can even select between a weight. Say you wanted 63.5 pounds, one side would be set to 60 and the other to 65. The weight will be unbalanced, but is definitely useful for slowly increasing weight (which was my biggest concern when I bought these).
These would be 100% perfect if they were just a little bit smaller length-wise. They're wider than a standard dumbbell which makes some exercises a bit of a pain, but not impossible.
I'm glad I bought them. I can't see myself ever using a different set of dumbbells again. Now if only Bowflex made SelectTech barbell sets...

I have only used them twice so far and I have found them to be the perfect dumbbell system. Very easy to use. I have no difficulty lifting, replacing or turning the dials. They are expensive, but a lot less than the individual equivalent.

I really like the SelectTech Dumbbells. I started with the smaller ones, needed more weight, and I moved up to this set. These are a must have for a home gym where you don't have room for lots of dumbbells.
Only drawback is sometimes it takes a second try to put the dumbbell back on the rack. That is, they don't always align quite right, so you need to lift it up and put it down again. Not a big deal and certainly isn't any reason you shouldn't get it. Just thought I would point it out.

How do the 1090's compare in size to the 552's? I have seen the 552's and they don't look to bulky. I want to get the 1090's so I can do squat movements when I can't get to the gym. When I use conventional dumbbells with 25's, they bang into my knee's (but I can't get enough 10's to fit). Also curious for curls, extensions, ect.
