I spend the winters in Arizona and cannot visit a gym, so I just bought the 1090 weights and 3.1 series bench. I absolutely love both products. I started building a home gym two years ago. I bought a Bowflex Extreme and like it very much. I wanted to add free weights too, as that is what I am used to. I decided to go with the 1090 adjustable dumbbells. Wow, what a fantastic purchase. The dumbbells are adjustable, of course. It cuts down on space and makes it very convenient and versatile. If you've been around a gym a while, you'll notice in using these that you can have "offset" weight on the bell, making it incredibly effective at targeting biceps, delts, and triceps. The quick change on weight parameters makes it super easy to get from one exercise to the next. I can't say enough positive things about these. It does take a few times to get used to the handling of these, as they have quite a bit of width on them, but the training video is great to figure out how to get the best workout. Warning- go lighter than you'd normally go when working out with these.

I lift between 2/3 times a week to supplement my cardio during tennis playing. For the most part it does as advertised and the space saving is a god send as I live in a relatively small space. However I feel like parts of the product may have some quality issues. Since part of the locking mechanism between the weights and handle bar is in plastic frequent dial changes will deteriorate the product faster. If you don't need to change the dials often I can see this thing lasting a lifetime. But as for me I tend to work out with couple buddies of mine and have various resistance needs and this product is already "sticking" due to frequent changes in weight setting.
BOTTOM LINE: I will recommend buying this product but only when you can get it at a sale price as the full retail price does not justify the quality.

I use this products to stay in shape. The greatest thing about this set of dumbbells is that they really are the last set of dumbbells you will ever need. i can't think of anything wrong with this set of dumbbells, they save me time and space.

Extremely easy to adjust, just twist the ends. Since each end is independent, you can actually adjust it more discretely than their stated tolerances (e.g. you turn one of the dials "5 lbs" more than the other, and you get an added 2.5 lbs.
The heavier version is a significant amount of weight and because the barbells are tiered, it's wider than dumbells sized to the exact weight. Totally worth the versatility tradeoff though.
I'd recommend padded gloves for the heavier weight version.
The product is so good that I'm tempted to get the lighter pair as well, just for the narrower profile when doing curls. For an athletic male, the heavy ones are perfect, providing versatility from curls all the way up to dumbbell press.

Weights are compact, easy to use, and feel sturdy. Generally a great purchase. Only complaint is the angular textured handles are painful to grip on the heavier settings, especially with rotational movements such as curls.

I was using a free weight set up to keep space down, but found I was spending the way too much time spinning weights on. Heard about the Bowflex Dumbbells through Tony Horton. I trust Tony as a trainer and have had past success with him so I decided to take a chance on the product.
Even though the purchase wasn't cheap, they have been worth every penny. Initially I was concerned they wouldn't be sturdy enough to trust rotating them and lifting them above my head, after using them now for months, they are rock solid.
Changing weight is so smooth and fast. If you have the wrong weight for what your doing, it literally takes seconds to step over to the stand and make that adjustment.
My only caution to anyone thinking about making the purchase is that the bar bells are long. Since they are sized to accommodate the 90lbs even when you are using 10lbs they are still quite long. I don't find this to be noticable if I'm curls with my elbows together, or going triceps on my back on the floor. If you have a smaller frame, or you don't think you will ever need the 90lbs per dumbbell just get the smaller dumbbells.
I also purchased the stand. The stand is a solid construction and went together easy. I have two toddlers and because of the small base I was concerned about it tipping over. We abused it quite a bit try to see if it would tip but it held up fine. It now sits in the living all the time, the only concern I have with it, is the kids banging their heads on it when they are walking and not paying attention.
Completely satisfied with my purchase, would recommend to anyone with a home gym set up

The dumbbells are great for general fitness and bodybuilding when I work too late to get to the gym at night. They help keep me in shape until I can make it back.
Unfortunately, there is room for improvement. The grips bite into your hands after about 50lbs and the rotation dials can badly bruise your thighs if you're using them for dumbbell press. Recommend buying a pair of large knee pads and using them to pad your thighs as well as a pair of lifting gloves.

How do the 1090's compare in size to the 552's? I have seen the 552's and they don't look to bulky. I want to get the 1090's so I can do squat movements when I can't get to the gym. When I use conventional dumbbells with 25's, they bang into my knee's (but I can't get enough 10's to fit). Also curious for curls, extensions, ect.
